BUSINESS RATES PRESENTATION

Neil Sargent, Chairman and Commercial Director, was recently invited to give a presentation and talk on business rates and the 2010 re-valuation to the Truro Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber Members have all felt the impact of the revision in business rates and Neil was able to explain, after giving a brief history of business rates and the technical terms and methodoly of calculating business rates, to explain how they were assessed, the various basis of potential appeals, the changes to and impact of business rates on empty property, the various rate reliefs or adjustments that can be obtained for rural and other businesses and how appeals can be lodged.

In his closing remarks Neil emphasised the need to ensure that proper professional advice was sought over the accuracy of business rates and the basis of appeals as bad advice could be costly.
